Tragedy Essay linked to A view from the bridge.

“The tragic right is a condition of life, a condition in which the human personality is able to flower and realise itself” This quote is definitely apparent in a view from the bridge as many character’s such as Eddie realise there personality as the play progresses.

“I think the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one thing” this is definitely true in a view from a bridge as Catherine will lay down her life to be with Rodolfo as she wants to go to Italy with him .

“The possibility of victory must be there in tragedy” the possibility of victory is definitely apparent in a view from the bridge Eddie wants to be victorious and have Catherine, he also dose not want Rodolfo to have her.

King Lear Quote Analysis.

King lear adresses’s the crowd with is opening sentence “does any here know me” he is asking this question as he is confuse and he is not sure what is going on and his mind is playing tricks on him. He then says “why, this is not lear” he is realising that he has changed and he is not his old self. He then proves that he is going mad when he says “Either his notion weakens or his discerings  are lethargied” this shows he is going mad and his thoughts are confusing him. He then finishes by asking who can tell him who he really is, this is showing he is desperate and he wants to know what has happend to what he used to be. Overall Lear is very distressed and confused how he has changed so much, he also talks about himself in the third person as he feels he is an entirely different man to the old king lear.

English Reflection

So far this year I have enjoyed my English lessons; we have mainly being looking at Tragic Drama, which I find interesting. I particularly enjoyed the harkness discussion we did as I thought I was a good discussion and I participated well in the discussion. We also have looked Oedipus the king and the poem London which we did a descriptive piece of writing which I didn’t particularly enjoy as I am not good at descriptive writing and find it hard to write to a high quality. We are looking at the play king Lear at the moment which I am not enjoying that much as I struggle to understand what is going on sometimes. Overall I have enjoyed my first four weeks of fourth form English, the preps have been fine and I have enjoyed classwork.

How to get an A* in english?

These are the most important points generally to get an A*

  1. Use analytical phrases to make what you are writing more effective and more concise.
  2. Use a wide range of challenging vocabulary.
  3. Use writing devices to make your piece more interesting and original e.g. Metaphor, Simile
  4. Use short well selected quotes that back up your points.
  5. Use punctuation effectively to make the paragraph flow.

Personally the most important points for me are:

  1. To improve on my punctuation so that I use commas and full stops in the right place, this will hopefully improve my general writing and make my essay’s better quality.
  2. To include paragraphs into my piece as I often forget which results in one big jumble  of words.
  3. To keep increasing my vocabulary so I am able to use extensive and impressive vocabulary.
  4. To keep reading as it gives you many ideas and inspirations for creative writing and essays and it also makes you all round better at English.

Mystery texts

Text A – This text is informal as it uses colloquial language and is planning to grasp the readers attention and get the point across through a chatty way, they have also used factual points to try and convey there message using shock tactics.

Text H – This text is telling the reader what to do and strictly instructing them, this makes the reader often do what the article says as although they dont have to the instructions imply you have to. The passage also makes it sound very simple so encourages the reader to do it as it is simple and stress free.

Lypsyl advert

Today in class we looked at presentation devices and the devices in a lypsyl advert, and this is my paragraph on the advert.

First of all the colours have a strong visual impact on the reader this will appeal to teenagers as it really stands out and looks fun and appealing. The advert also entices teenage girls into buying a lypsyl with the chance to win a trip around london, this is a very effective way of getting teenage girls to buy the product. The use of the big picture off the two girls having fun and laughing whilst shopping which is what almost all teenage girls want to do entices them into wanting to buy the lypsyl in order to have a chance of doing what they see in the picture. The advertisement is also structured in a clear and concise manner which isn’t confusing and conveys the message effectively.

In terms of language, the writer makes a series of significant word choices to establish a powerful mood. The choice of the word 13 would suggest that they have very modern technology.
